There was some disagreement what he said.

"Developers first" is a very precise insight on what makes Microsoft Windows great: keeping your developers happy. And there is just another thing to be sure of: If marketing emphasizes a certain image, it means they are slipping - or plan to slip.

Not wanting to go into yet another anti-microsoft rant: I sometimes wish Microsoft would remember the "monkey dance" more often.

Erstens wollte ich "plummet" verwenden - ich bin kein Muttersprachler und das Wort ist vielleicht ungeschickt, aber es gefällt mir.

Zweitens war ich ein paar Tage vorher auf einem totalen erinnerungstrip (sehr ungesund) Fiddlers green mit Anna... Das ist sowas wie den Teufel mit dem Beelzebub austreiben.

We say "get a life" to each other, disappointed or jokingly. What we forget, though, is that this is possibly the most destructive advice you can give to a geek.

When I picked this as my sig, I had the feeling my life turned from "typical geek" to some excerpt from a Nick Hornby story. Definitely "life", but I wasn't sure if I like it. The meanings, though, can differ: Getting a life may mean you "merely" lose geekship, or it may break you because you are not able to cope.

As for me, it seems to work out fine - it actually gives me back some "coder focus".

Found this quote in an interview with Kurt Vonnegut, sci-fi writer born in 1922, author of "Sirens of Titan", "Slaughterhouse 5" among others.

(indicentally, "Slaughterhouse 5", naming the place where he was kept as POW duringWW2, plays in my home town, Dresden)

His son Mark said above lines to him, I've forgotten the context.
I very much like them, because it captures two important things in a simple sentence:

First, the meaning of life and our existence, especially, the frightening, humbling feeling this question puts on us. We have to accept this thing to lead our lifes, even if we don't like it. And we tumble between resignation ("whatever.") and asking the question again and again (what is this?)

Second, going beyond oneself: "Help each other through". We *do* have responsibility for the guy and gal over there, not in a legal sense, but more fundamental, call it "moral", or "ethic" - I call it "human".
It's not easy. But it's easier if we do it together.
