Lost in Translation

Not as good as it's hyped, and definitely not the "hilarious comedy" it was advertised as.

It does have merit, mostly virtue by absence - highyl characterized by one single non-event:

When Murray carries the drunk, tired girl to her room, they do not run into her husband, nor do they make out.

It's not that "we can top this joke with that joke, it would be a waste to let it go" that gets surprising only by it's tastelessness and lack of hesitation to pull deus out of his machina. Nor is it the action-drama a triangle story like this usually calls for.

And this alone is very refreshing.
It's charming, romantic, "nice" only in the very best possible meaning of this word, and Bill Murray is a joy.

Then, it's like what Sonderbergh did to Solaris (Lems or the Torkovskis - you pick), it's what Hollywood would to to an Kaurismäki. It feels caught between two worlds, lets see if Sophie can make anything of it.
